You start knowing how many pairs of evil players there are.

You have powerful starting information, but it can be a little hard to parse. You are learning how many pairs of evil players there are - e.g. if you receive a two, that means there are three evil players in a row (Player A and B as pair one, Player B and C as pair two).
Keep in mind that the Recluse can register in your pairs, and the Spy can register as good and not be included in your pairs.
Your information is particularly helpful if you can work out one confirmed evil player. If you can confirm a Minion somewhere, you can rule out others as evil and cast your suspicions elsewhere.
